Radiology Fellowships, DMs and Super-Speciality DNBs in India

Radiology is a unique branch of medicine, in that radiologists are supposed to keep oneself updated not just with advances in their own field, but also with advances in other clinical branches including superspecialty branches, all of which are growing at a tremendous rate. As such, for a complete understanding of pathology, diagnostics, patient management and interventions, it makes sense for radiologists to subspecialize and be able to serve the patient and help the referring physician better.

Subspecialization is now becoming increasingly popular in India, with more and more young radiologists opting for fellowships or DM courses. This is true particularly in tier 1 and slowly even in tier 2 cities, as the number of general radiologists in these places reaches saturation levels. Many young motivated radiologists now wish to invest their early years post MD/DNB in honing their skills in a particular subspeciality or modality, so that they can impact patient care better. Furthermore, with AI entering the picture slowly but surely, subspecialization offers a chance for the radiologist to remain relevant to the referring physician and patient and create a value for himself/herself which AI cannot match.

With this in mind, we have compiled a list of fellowships, DM and super-speciality DNB courses currently available in India for radiologists. When we started this process, we had no clue that over 120 different subspecialization options now exist in India! Some trends also become clear. While interventional radiology has the maximum subspecialty options, a lot of options are also available for MSK, neuroradiology, and breast imaging. Modality specific fellowships like cross-sectional fellowship and ultrasound fellowship options are also available, while more focussed options like cancer imaging, chest imaging, and pediatric radiology (amongst others) are also growing.

Some points to note.

  • Though we have tried our best to make the list as extensive as possible, we may have still missed a few courses (and new courses will also come up as well in the coming years) and readers are welcome to update us regarding the same in the comments section or by emailing us at caferoentgen@gmail.com.
  • The links to the fellowship details / brochure may also change as the fellowship-related website and brochures may get updated; apologies in advance for that. We’ll try to keep the links updated as much as possible. If the link doesn’t work, do let us know! And go to the parent website on the link and you should be able to figure out details about the fellowship from there.
  • We are regularly adding individual blogs with details of different fellowships, how to secure them, what to expect while working in the fellowship, and their overall their pros and cons. We encourage everyone to get us in touch with radiologists who can help us in reviewing these fellowships so that others can benefit from it!
  • Take the reviews with a pinch of salt. It is not always possible to be very critical of the courses in public (unless anonymous). So while people will be frank with the details of the course and exposure etc, the stress and hierarchy in the system may not be something they would be able to write about. Speak to people who have completed the course for a more frank review, or get in touch with us and we will happily connect you to someone.

So go ahead, and dive in to realize the enormous potential which is now available for Indian radiologists to subspecialize and keep themselves relevant to the changing medical scenario!

There are multiple fellowships offered across different institutes, majority of which are accredited by various state universities or deemed universities. Radiologists who have completed MD or DNB Radiodiagnosis from MCI recognized institutes in India are eligible to apply for most of these courses, but some fellowships (particularly non-accredited ones) may potentially allow DMRD or CPS candidates as well; this needs to be clarified directly with the concerned institute.

NBE has also started Fellow of National Board (FNB) fellowships in India, admission for which is through the FET (Fellowship Entrance Test). These FNB fellowships for Breast imaging, Cross sectional (CT-MRI) imaging and Interventional Neuro-radiology are also mentioned in the table. Fellowships accredited by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences are marked with MUHS. There are some non-accredited fellowships also offered, which are marked with an asterisk.
